San Francisco Foundation donates grant to assist BHNC with critical food support and household supplies

Seniors from our CASA housing site during the 2019 Holidays

We recently received a $5,000 grant from The San Francisco Foundation that will provide critical food support and household supplies to low-income, home-bound seniors and people with disabilities in danger of experiencing hunger and illness during the Shelter-in-Place orders.

We routinely serve the lowest income residents of SF who are already on the edge of crisis before adding a pandemic. They include seniors in public housing, monolingual Chinese- or Spanish speakers, people of color and residents with disabilities, all of whom live in poverty.

We have begun serving tenants living at our CASA site and they are mostly monolingual Chinese. There are also countless others who are food-insecure due to lost income with no savings, children who are home from school and not receiving free daily school lunch and breakfast, or individuals experiencing interrupted public services.

The grant will help us to make food deliveries for the most critical situations: seniors with disabilities who cannot leave their homes and have no technology or money to order delivery. Through our wellness calls, we also found that a disturbing number of households do not have hand soap, much less hand sanitizer and cleaning supplies.

At BHNC we are driven by a social justice mission to serve and mobilize SF’s most impoverished residents that include addressing this public health issue. We provide individuals and households with basic food staples and household support. Each household will receive a value of $150 in products that will support them for a few weeks.

We are very thankful to The San Francisco Foundation for funding this critically needed service and will continue to serve this community to the best of our ability!
