Generous Face Shield Donation for our Essential Workers

We are so grateful for the generous donation of shield masks for our BHNC staff from 3D Printing Friends of the Bay, a group of Bay Area professionals that include architects, engineers, artists, teachers, and makers who are producing 3D printed face shields to donate to health care providers and essential employees in need of PPE (personal protective equipment)!

Jennifer Hamrick, Assoc. AIA, and Julia Mandell, AIA of Wilson Associates; a design-build-development firm in Oakland, donated 35 face shields to our Center to help protect all of our workers after hearing about the work we have been doing recently from our weekly email updates.

Jennifer previously lived in Bernal five years ago and wanted to give back. Her and her printing group were looking for organizations that are helping and supporting the community, taking care of the seniors. They had already donated to HealthRight360, another organization that does similar work. Wilson Associates answered the call to print PPE and join 3D Printing Friends of the Bay after receiving an email from the SFMOMA asking those with 3D printers to join in the fight against COVID-19. The 3D printer that their office intended to use to create building models has been hard at work printing face shields instead.

The shields are reusable and can be sanitized. They offer extra protection and help extend the life of cloth masks. They have donated over 3,600 shields so far to places including St. Mary’s, Alta Bates Summit Medical Center, UCSF, HealthRIGHT 360, and several locations in NYC. If your organization is in need of face shields or you want to learn more about their organization, visit: https://www.opensourcecovidshield.com/.
